# Manage suppressions

> View, filter, add, import, export and delete suppressions in the dashboard or with the API, configure automatic suppression, and resend suppressed emails.

This guide covers every task on the suppression list: finding entries, adding them one at a time or from a CSV file, exporting, removing them and controlling automatic suppression. For how suppressions work, see [Suppressions](/docs/suppressions/).

## Before you begin

- Any workspace member can manage the list in the dashboard. Changing automatic suppression settings requires an admin.
- For the API, use an API key with **Full Access**.

## View and filter the list

**Dashboard**

  Go to **Email API → Suppressions**. The table lists each suppression's **Email**, **Reason** and **Created at**, newest first.

  - **Search** matches the email address and the reason.
  - **Filters** add rules on **Email**, **Reason**, **Type** or **Created at**, such as *Type equals complaint*. Press Enter or select **Apply**.
  - **Display options > Edit columns** shows the **Type** column.
  - Select a column header to sort by it.

**API**

  Call [List suppressions](/docs/api-reference/suppressions/list/). You can filter on `email`, `reason`, `type`, `created_at` and `keep_until`:

```bash
curl -G https://api.emailit.com/v2/suppressions \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $EMAILIT_API_KEY" \
  --data-urlencode "type.exact=complaint" \
  --data-urlencode "limit=100"
```

  To look up one address, call [Retrieve a suppression](/docs/api-reference/suppressions/get/) with its `sup_` ID or the email address. See [Filtering](/docs/api-reference/filtering/) for every operator.

## Add a suppression

**Dashboard**

  1. **Open the list.** Go to **Email API → Suppressions** and select **Add suppression**.

  2. **Enter the details.** Type the **Email** and, optionally, a **Reason** you'll recognize later.

  3. **Select Create.** The address is added with the type `recipient`, which blocks all mail to it.

  To add another type, or a suppression that expires, use the API or a CSV import.

**API**

  Call [Create a suppression](/docs/api-reference/suppressions/create/):

```bash
curl https://api.emailit.com/v2/suppressions \
  -X POST \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $EMAILIT_API_KEY" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "email": "ada@example.com",
    "type": "unsubscribe",
    "reason": "Opted out by phone",
    "keep_until": "2027-01-01T00:00:00Z"
  }'
```

  | Field | Required | Description |
  | --- | --- | --- |
  | `email` | Yes | The address to suppress. |
  | `type` | No | `recipient` (default), `bounce`, `complaint` or `unsubscribe`. |
  | `reason` | No | Free text. |
  | `keep_until` | No | When the suppression expires: ISO 8601, a Unix timestamp or plain English such as `in 30 days`. Leave it out to suppress forever. |

  The same address and type can only be added once. A duplicate returns `409 Suppression already exists for this email and type`.

## Import a CSV file

Use an import to move a suppression list from another provider or to add many addresses at once.

1. **Prepare the file.** Use a `.csv` file with the columns `email`, `type` and `reason`:

```csv title="suppressions.csv"
email,type,reason
ada@example.com,bounce,Hard bounce at previous provider
grace@example.com,unsubscribe,Unsubscribed in 2025
alan@example.com,,Requested removal
```

   - `email` is required. `type` and `reason` are optional.
   - An empty or unknown `type` becomes `recipient`.
   - The header row is optional. Without one, Emailit reads the columns in the order `email`, `type`, `reason`.
   - The file must be smaller than 8 MB and have no more than 10,000 rows.

2. **Upload it.** On **Email API → Suppressions**, select **Import**, then choose the file or drag it onto **Select a file or drag it here**.

3. **Check the result.** Emailit adds new entries and skips addresses that already have a suppression of the same type. Rows with invalid email addresses are skipped.

For more than 10,000 addresses, split the file. To import from code, call [Create a suppression](/docs/api-reference/suppressions/create/) for each address.

## Export the list

1. **Narrow it down.** Optionally search or filter the list in **Email API → Suppressions**. The export includes only what's shown.

2. **Export.** Select **Export**, then **Export** in the popover. Emailit downloads `suppressions.csv`.

The file has the columns `email`, `type`, `reason` and `created_at`, and contains up to 10,000 rows.

## Delete suppressions

Deleting a suppression lets Emailit send to the address again. Make sure the address is valid and the person wants your mail, or the next send may bounce or draw a complaint.

**Dashboard**

  - **One:** select the trash icon on its row and confirm.
  - **Several:** select the rows with the checkboxes, select **Delete suppressions** and confirm.

**API**

  Call [Delete a suppression](/docs/api-reference/suppressions/delete/) with the `sup_` ID or the email address:

```bash
curl https://api.emailit.com/v2/suppressions/sup_4Lm8Qr2Tz6Wk \
  -X DELETE \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $EMAILIT_API_KEY"
```

  If an address has suppressions of more than one type, use the `sup_` ID so you delete the right one.

  To change a suppression instead, for example to add an expiry date, call [Update a suppression](/docs/api-reference/suppressions/update/) with `type`, `reason` or `keep_until`. Set `keep_until` to `null` to remove the expiry.

## Configure automatic suppression

Emailit adds addresses that bounce or complain to the list automatically. On Pro and Business, admins can change this.

1. **Open the settings.** Go to **Workspace → Settings** and select the **Suppressions** tab.

2. **Turn it on or off.** Use **Enable automatic suppression**.

3. **Choose what to suppress.** In **Suppress on**, pick **Bounces and Complaints** (default), **Bounces only** or **Complaints only**.

On Pay as you go and Custom plans, automatic suppression is always on for bounces and complaints. The controls show a **Pro** badge and can't be changed. Members who aren't admins can view the settings but not change them. See [Bounces and complaints](/docs/deliverability/bounces-and-complaints/#automatic-suppression) for exactly when Emailit suppresses an address.

## Retry suppressed emails

A message that was blocked by a suppression stays `suppressed` even after you delete the suppression. To send it:

1. **Delete the suppression** for the address, as described above. Otherwise the retry is suppressed again.

2. **Retry the email.** Open it in **Email API → Emails** and select **Retry**, or call [Retry an email](/docs/api-reference/emails/retry/).

A retry creates a new email with the same content and a new ID, and costs credits like any other send. You can retry emails up to 30 days old, as long as their content is still within your [data retention](/docs/data-retention/) period.
