FAQ
How do I transfer ownership of a workspace?
Workspace ownership can't be transferred from the dashboard. Make the new person an admin, then ask support to move ownership.
Every workspace has one owner: the person who created it. There’s no button to hand ownership to someone else, so ownership transfers go through support. This article explains what the owner can do and how to prepare a transfer.
Symptoms
- Changing the owner’s role fails with Cannot change the workspace owner’s role.
- Removing the owner fails with Cannot remove the workspace owner.
- The person who set up your workspace is leaving the company, and you want someone else to be responsible for it.
Cause
The owner is always an admin and can’t be demoted or removed by anyone. Emailit also sends some notifications only to the owner, such as webhook failure alerts and the “Sending domain is no longer verified” email.
Most day-to-day control doesn’t need ownership. Any Admin has full access to workspace settings, members, API keys and billing. See Members and roles.
Fix
-
Invite the new owner as an admin. In WorkspaceSettings, open Members, select Invite Member, enter their email and choose the Admin role. They accept from the invitation email. See Invitations.
-
Hand over billing. In WorkspaceBilling, update the payment method, billing email and billing address to the new owner’s details, so invoices and receipts reach the right person.
-
Request the transfer. The current owner contacts support from their account email and names the workspace and the new owner’s email address. Do this after the new owner has joined the workspace.
-
If the owner is no longer available, an admin of the workspace contacts support instead and explains the situation.
-
Tidy up after the transfer. Once the transfer is done, the new owner can remove the former owner from Members if they no longer need access. Regenerate API keys the former owner had access to. See API keys.
A user account can belong to many workspaces. If you only need a setup of your own, you can also create a new workspace from the workspace switcher, add your domains there and create new API keys.
Still stuck?
Contact support with the workspace name and the email addresses of the current and new owner.
