Guide

What are email countdown timers for?

A countdown in email is a live image that shows how much time is left until a deadline. Because most inboxes do not run JavaScript, the timer is rendered as a PNG or animated GIF and updates when the email is opened or refreshed.

Why use them

  • Create urgency for flash sales, product drops, and limited seats.
  • Make event reminders feel more immediate than a static date line.
  • Keep the deadline visible without asking readers to check another app.
  • Match your brand with colors, labels, and animation style.

When not to use them

  • Avoid fake urgency. If the deadline is not real, countdowns erode trust.
  • Skip them for evergreen content with no meaningful end date.
  • Be careful with very long horizons. A timer months away can look stale and reduce impact.
  • Do not rely on GIF animation alone. Some clients freeze GIFs, so the first frame and copy should still make the deadline clear.
  • If accessibility or image blocking is a concern, always include the date and time in plain text next to the image.

FAQ

Countdown FAQ

Quick answers about using this tool in real email campaigns.

Is this countdown tool free to use?
Yes. You can design the timer and embed the image URL without creating an Emailit account. Fair-use rate limits apply to keep the service reliable for everyone.
Do I need an Emailit account?
No account is required for this tool. You can copy the image URL or HTML snippet and use it with any email platform.
How does a countdown work in email?
Email clients do not run live scripts inside messages. This tool generates a PNG or GIF from a target time and your design settings. When someone opens the email, their client loads the latest image from our tools URL.
Should I use PNG or GIF?
Use PNG when you want a lightweight static snapshot of the remaining time. Use GIF when you want the seconds to tick in clients that support animated images. Many clients show only the first GIF frame, so keep labels and expired text clear either way.
Will the countdown keep updating after I send the email?
Yes, as long as the image URL stays the same and can be loaded. Each open can fetch a fresh render based on the current time and your target timestamp. Cached images may take a moment to refresh depending on the inbox provider.
Can I use my own language for Days, Hours, Minutes, and Seconds?
Yes. Edit the unit labels in the builder to any language or wording you want. You can also change the expired message that appears when the countdown reaches zero.
Does this work in Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail?
Static PNGs are widely supported. Animated GIFs work in many clients, including Gmail and Apple Mail, but Outlook desktop often shows a static first frame. Always test in your main inboxes before a big send.
What happens when the countdown ends?
The image shows your expired text instead of the ticking units. Set that message to something useful, like “Sale ended” or “Event started”.
Is there a limit on how often the image can be requested?
Yes. The tools API uses per-IP rate limits so heavy image rendering does not overload the service. Normal campaign traffic is fine. Extremely high-volume or abusive traffic may be throttled.
Can I host the image myself?
The live preview and embed URL are served from Emailit’s tools API so the timer can stay up to date. If you only need a one-off static image, download or screenshot a PNG. For a continuously updating timer, keep using the tools URL.
