How-to
Manage subscriptions page
Give every recipient a page where they choose which audiences they get. Control which audiences appear with public and private visibility, a public name and a description.
The manage subscriptions page lets each recipient choose which of your audiences they want to get, instead of unsubscribing from everything. Every contact has their own link to it, and Emailit hosts the page.
What recipients see
The page lists, for one contact:
- every public audience of the workspace, so people can join lists they aren’t on yet, and
- every private audience they are on, or were on before, so they can leave it or join it again.
Each audience shows its public name and description with a switch. A change is saved as soon as the switch moves. Unsubscribe from all turns off every audience of the workspace for that contact, including ones the page doesn’t show.
Archived audiences don’t appear, except ones the person is still subscribed to, so they can still leave them.
How the page looks
The page has the same design as your unsubscribe page. On the Pro, Business and Custom plans that’s your design: its colors, fonts, logo, footer and languages. On Pay as you go, and until you design your page, it’s Emailit’s.
The page’s own texts, such as the title and Unsubscribe from all, are built in, in English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese and Czech. It opens in the first language of the design that matches the recipient’s browser, like the unsubscribe page. Add ?lang=de to the link to choose one. Your public names and descriptions show as you wrote them.
Choose what each audience shows
-
Open the settings. Go to Email MarketingAudiences, open the audience and select the Settings tab.
-
Name it for subscribers. In Name and visibility, enter a Public name, such as “Monthly newsletter”, and a one-line Public description. Without a public name, recipients see the audience’s internal name.
-
Pick the visibility. Choose Public to list the audience for everyone, or Private to show it only to people who are on it or were before. New audiences are private.
-
Save. Select Save.
The public name is also what recipients see in double opt-in and confirmation emails and on the unsubscribe page, so you can keep internal names like “Leads 2024 import” to yourself.
Link to the page
Add the {{manage_subscriptions_url}} merge tag to your campaigns, next to the unsubscribe link:
<a href="{{manage_subscriptions_url}}">Manage your subscriptions</a>
·
<a href="{{unsubscribe_url}}">Unsubscribe</a>Emailit also links to the page from:
- the unsubscribe page, after someone unsubscribes from a campaign (turn off Manage subscriptions link in the page’s Confirmation block to hide it),
- the confirmation page people see after clicking a double opt-in link, and
- the default confirmation email footer.
In test sends the merge tag is empty, because a test isn’t sent to a contact.
How the link works
Each link contains the contact ID and a signature, so it works without a login and can’t be guessed or changed to reach someone else’s page. Links don’t expire. Anyone who has a recipient’s link can change that recipient’s subscriptions, which is why it only goes into emails sent to that recipient.
Recipient pages, including this one, the unsubscribe page and the double opt-in confirmation page, are never indexed by search engines: Emailit sends X-Robots-Tag: noindex, nofollow and a matching robots meta tag.
What a change does
| Action | Result |
|---|---|
| Turn on a public audience | The person joins with Subscribed on, without double opt-in, because the link was emailed to them. A subscriber.created or subscriber.updated event is sent and the confirmation email goes out if it’s on. |
| Turn off an audience | Subscribed turns off and the unsubscribe is recorded with a subscriber.updated event, like an unsubscribe link without a campaign. |
| Unsubscribe from all | Every audience of the contact is turned off. The contact’s marketing status doesn’t change. |
See Unsubscribes for how these opt-outs relate to the other kinds.
